MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg have only sufficiently completed the 2023/24 season. The Swabians have established themselves in the top group of the BBL in recent years, but know that a lot has to come together if it is to be more than the playoff quarterfinals. This minimum goal was achieved, but the performances up to that point were partly absurdly fluctuating. What weighed even heavier for the Giants, however, was the loss of their sporting identity. Alexander Reil, the president, says: „We have built a brand, what our playing style is concerned, we want to re-establish that.“ Ludwigsburg had a reputation in recent years as the most unpleasant team in the league – and was quite proud of it. Nobody liked playing against the defensively and physically outstandingly positioned Giants. In two seasons under Josh King, the results were somewhat satisfactory, but the fluctuations were huge. Big wins like in the main round against Alba Berlin or in the playoffs against the Bayern were always possible, but also numerous defeats against teams that were behind „Lubu“ in the table. Consequence: Head coach King had to leave, is moving to Darüssafaka Istanbul. Instead, the man returns who developed the Ludwigsburg „Nobody likes us and that's fine“ mentality: John Patrick. He will work with a strongly changed squad. With Jayvon Graves, Silas Melson and Desure Buie, the three top scorers are gone. All three point guards scored an average of double digits, ensured victories with 100 or more points on good days. On bad days, however, they were mostly responsible for partial heavy defeats. This lottery topic bothered not only boss Reil in Ludwigsburg, but also the loyal fans. The 2023/24 season was only sufficient for the MHP Riesen despite the playoff quarterfinals. SPORT BILD gives the season a grade of 4. The future looks uncertain, but one thing is certain: the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg will fight for success again. With a new coach and a new squad, the 2024/25 season will be exciting. The fans hope for a better season and for the success the team deserves.
